Washington City Council

The City of Washington is governed by a Council/Manager form of government. The elected City Council hires a City Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of municipal services and government.

The mayor and all five members of the Washington City Council are elected at-large by the citizens of Washington in November of odd-numbered years. All serve two-year terms.

Washington City Council meets regularly on the second Monday of the month in the City Council Chambers, Room 214, Municipal Building, 102 E. Second Street. Meetings usually start at 5:30 p.m. Public hearings at regular meetings usually are scheduled for 6 p.m. Public comments can be made as a scheduled public appearance (scheduled in advance of the meeting) or following public hearings during the "Comments from the Public" portion of the agenda. City Council also may hold special meetings at other times. Meeting schedules are announced in the Washington Daily News, on the local Government Access Channel (Washington's Cable Channel 9) and on the city government web site. Contact the City Clerk at (252) 975-9318 regarding business for City Council.
