Washington's Historic District "Guidelines for Property Owners"

Part 2: Washington's Historic District

The City of Washington governs land use and building activities in the Historic District to protect the area's historic and cultural resources. The goal is to discourage development or alterations that would not be in keeping with the historic period these buildings represent. People who live in the Historic District can be assured that the uniformity of the houses and character of the neighborhood will not change.

Designation as a Historic District provides limited protection from potentially adverse effects of federally funded, licensed or assisted projects. Another benefit is that the owners of property listed in the National Register are eligible for federal grants for rehabilitation and restoration and for certain federal and state income tax advantages.
