North Carolina's municipal power communities and state emergency managment officials have developed a "Hurricane Preparedness Test." To take the test and learn of other useful web sites on storm preparedness visit: www.electricities.com/stormtest.

"Repairing Your Flooded Home," a Federal Emergency Management Agency publication, is a useful resource on preparing for and recovering from floods. It is available at no charge by calling FEMA publications at 1-800-480-2520 or writing P.O. Box 2012, Jessup, MD, 20794-2012. Request publication FEMA 234.

FEMA's web site (www.fema.gov) provides information for storm preparedness and recovery and resources for children.

The National Hurricane Center Tropical Prediction Center's web site (www.nhc.noaa.gov) posts the latest tropical storm forecasts and reconnaissance data.

Storm Disaster Assistance

If Beaufort County is designated a federal major disaster areas following a hurricane, residents and businesses may be eligible for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for storm-related damages or losses. Another option for paying for storm damages could be the Small Business Administration's Disaster Loan Program,. Following Hurricane Bonnie, the SBA provided low-interest loans to eligible homeowners, renters and business owners for replacement or restoration of disaster-damaged real and personal property. Application procedures for disaster aid will be publicized through the local news media, on this web site and on the FEMA website.
