The facility of the Washington Police Department was built in 1975 and is located at 201 West Third Street. We encourage citizen input and welcome everyone to stop by and visit our facility. Feel free to ask questions or voice your concerns.

Administrative Division

The Administrative Division is responsible for budgetary needs, equipment/supplies, maintenance of facility and equipment, payroll, training, policy & procedures, and personnel matters. 

The Washington animal control officer operates within the Administrative Division of the Washington Police Department. Duties include enforcing the City of Washington's Animal Control Ordinances, educating the public on proper animal control responsibilities, and investigating animal cruelty, dog bites/animal attacks, and vicious dogs.

Uniformed Patrol Division

The Uniformed Patrol Division is the most visible component of the WPD.  Their duties include responding to 911 emergencies, investigating traffic crashes, enforcing DWI and other traffic safety laws and assisting the community with an assortment of needs.  Although arresting law breakers is a major part of their job, lots of a patrol officer's time is spent preventing crime.  This is certainly where the action is, where every shift brings something different.  There are School resource officers assigned to our high school and middle school.  These officers ensure an environment conducive to learning by providing an umbrella of safety at the schools.  They also act as mentors for many students, providing counseling and encouragement.  The WPD knows that our future leaders are school students today, and are dedicated in providing them the best school experience possible.  The Uniformed Patrol Division is commanded by Lt. Cliff Hales.

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division performs crime scene processing and evidence collection.  It conducts thorough investigations on major crimes, working closely with our District Attorney's office to ensure the timely prosecution of criminals.  These detectives support the mission of the Patrol Division by dedicating time, and resources to major crimes, that a patrol officer cannot.  Our narcotics officers conduct initial and follow-up investigations on the use and sale of illegal drugs.  Be it street level dealing or more involved supplier cases, they work them all.  Several times a year, undercover operations are held, which identify many drug dealers.  As information is gathered, it is used to make cases on suppliers, often involving Federal authorities.  The Criminal Investigations Division is commanded by Lt. William Chrismon.

Support Services Division

The Support Services Division provides communication and logistical services for the organization.  From the E-911 center to animal control, it's all handled by the Support Services Division.  The maintenance of our fleet of marked and unmarked vehicles is overseen by this division, striving to keep the officers in safe, well equipped vehicles.  This division is commanded by Lt. William Chrismon.

Our E-911 center answers all 911 calls placed within our city.  It also answers non-emergency phone calls and provides radio dispatching of Police, Fire and EMS responders.  Our Telecommunicators utilize computer aided dispatching systems to track resources and calls for service.  The 911 center is supervised by TCS. Angela Flowers.

Support Services also ensures that our fleet is operating at maximum efficiency and is equipped with some of the best equipment available.  From radars to mobile data computers, our officers have at their disposal an arsenal of equipment designed to keep them in the field instead of in the office.  The use of technology to help the officer do their job better is important to the WPD.

In order to wear the WPD blue, you must be:

 

• At least 20 years of age
• Hold a valid NC driver's license
• A high school graduate or GED certificate
• A very clean personal background
• Good physical and mental health
• Motivated and Dedicated
