Code of the City of Washington, North Carolina
Chapter 27 - Zoning
Article XVI. Signs
Section 165: Permit required

(a) Except as otherwise provided in Section 27-166 and Section 27-167, no sign may be erected, moved, enlarged, or substantially altered except in accordance with the provisions of this section. Merely repainting or changing the message of the sign shall not, in and of itself, be considered a substantial alteration, unless a change of use or occupancy occurs. If a change of use or occupancy occurs, or if a sign is replaced, then a sign permit shall be required.

(b) Sign permit approval is a separate process from building permit approval. Although detailed sign plans may be included in site plans for a building permit, a separate sign permit must be obtained before any sign can be constructed.

(c) Signs may be erected, moved, enlarged, or substantially altered only in accordance with a sign permit issued by the City of Washington. Violations of this provision shall be handled in accordance with Article XXI, Administration, Enforcement, Penalties.
